The Beginning of Now

“The one unique thing each of us has, is ourselves.”

--Jim Williams

Jim's house tells his story. It could also double as an art gallery. Not being able to throw the doors open and invite the public in, Jim has done the next best thing. He's put his house in a book.

An architect by trade, Jim's house reflects his eye for meaning. Each room is filled to the brim with art, photographs, and collages of his past and present life. At 70 his style is youthful. Speaks of energy and fun. But is grounded in personal experiences. The back yard is secluded and inviting. It's a small garden paradise, where you continually find that you are discovering subtle art pieces and unique building structure. A large male mulberry tree, wrapped by two female shoots (the female shoots trimmed back so there's no berry mess) keeps the patio comfortable no matter the heat. There's an art studio on one side of the tree, and a patio with picnic table on the other. Jasmine plants give off a light sweet fragrance. That's where Jim and I talked after his gracious room by room tour of his house. We talked for hours. Our discussion, like his art, explored who Jim is, and how he got there. Nothing was taboo. Politics. Religion. Feelings. Family.

Jim's art“the beginning of now” takes the reader on a tour of Jim's house, with photographs by TJ Nelson, and writings by Cara Despain. In doing so, it also takes the reader on a tour of Jim's life. The two are indistinguishable. And fascinating.
